Help! How do I report damage to Zurich?

  • You can open and follow up a claim file yourself via the Mi Zurich app. Don't have the app installed yet? You can find more information about the Mi Zurich app at: https://azul.zurich.es/mizurich/app/sec/login?lang=nl_NL
  • If you have technical problems installing the Mi Zurich app, among others: tel: (0034) 917549900, choose option 1, and ask an IT specialist who speaks English. Or e-mail in English to: zurichsoporte@zurich.com

  • You can also call the specialised Zurich claims team for foreign customers: (0034) 933 660 777. They can speak to you in English, French, German or Spanish, depending on your preference (sometimes via translators).

How does Zurich establish extreme weather conditions ocurred?

First, it must be established that there have been weather conditions and atmospheric phenomena that should actually be considered atypical and abnormal.

For this, Zurich will contact the Ministry of Environment. It is therefore extremely important to know the exact date when the claim occurred.

Help! Can I start clearing, repairing and cleaning already?

In case of damage to your property, you will probably be visited by an expert to measure the damage. You will then also need to take the following measures:

  • Keep the damaged items.
  • Take photos of all damage done in the state everything was in immediately after the damage incident.
  • Clean only what is strictly necessary to prevent worse damage: if the expert can see the damage in the state it was in immediately after the incident, he can assess the damage more accurately.

In the case of gota fria or another disaster, where it may take longer for the experts to come to you because of the large number of damages, you can already clean up and instruct your repairmen to start the work, documenting everything well with photos and working with correct companies that work at normal market prices.

Important: we do need photos from before and after the repair.

What documentation should I submit in case of home damage due to extreme weather conditions?

To process the claim quickly and correctly, it is important that you provide the following information.

When you have not repaired the damage (yet), you should provide us with the following:

  • Specification and exact date of the weather event in question.
  • The extent of the damage suffered, including an approximate cost estimate.
  • Whether you need a repairer.

If you did repair the damage, you must provide us with the following:

  • The photos of the damage in the state in which everything was immediately after.
  • Written specification of the damage done, its exact weather conditions and date.
  • The authenticated repair invoice specifying the work carried out.

What is not insured within this warranty?

  •  If rainwater seeps in: the cost of detecting a defect in the roof, terrace or walls, repairing and waterproofing it.
  • Damage attributable to a lack of maintenance or precaution
  • Moisture measurements.
  •  Leaks, oxidation or slowly developing moisture spots.
  • Snow, water, sand or dust, through doors, windows or other openings that were not closed or cannot be properly sealed.
  • Damage to trees and gardens.

Why is the cause of rain damage not covered?

Fierce rain does not break the roof, terraces or walls, so no insurance will cover their repair when it rains.  This is the owner's responsibility.

please note!

In case it is clear that your roof, terraces or walls are not waterproof, the insurance will only cover the damage caused to walls, ceiling,...  and will only reimburse or repair the damage caused after the cause has been effectively repaired by the owner. This is organised by the owner, not by your insurance company or agent.

What is not insured within this guarantee (and with no insurance company)?

If rainwater seeps in due to the poor condition of the insulation of the roof/exterior walls/terrace: the cost of detecting a defect in roof, terrace or walls, repairing and waterproofing them is NOT covered. You must have your roof, terrace or walls waterproofed yourself.

This is important and in your own interest to prevent future damage. So for this, you should not wait for the expert visit. Because of this severe weather, it may take several weeks at worst before an expert comes for the other damage you have in your house.

This other damage can only be compensated if you can prove that the cause has been repaired in the meantime. Therefore, please ask the repairer of the roof, terrace or walls for photos, a description and/or an invoice of the repair.

Summary : Damage to your house caused by rainwater entering through roof, terrace or walls is covered by your insurance. Repairing and sealing the roof, terrace or walls to prevent rainwater from re-entering are not covered (by any insurance company), and should therefore be done by yourself as soon as possible.

Do you live in a flat?

Facades, terraces, and the roof of an apartment complex are part of the communal parts. Rainwater seeping in through facades, terraces, and the roof of an apartment complex is a damage for which the community is responsible. So the comunidad must waterproof facades, terraces, and the roof and report your damage to their insurance company. You should contact them in that case.
